the process

STEP 1

Consultation:
We’ll examine your tooth with x-rays (as needed) and determine whether a crown is the best choice for you.

STEP 2

Preparation & Impressions:
Your tooth is prepped to create space for the crown. The process is typically painless and local anesthesia is used. We take an impression of the prepped tooth. You will go home with a provisional crown in place.

STEP 3

Try-In:
Once your crown is made, the fit, tightness, bite, and color are checked. Four out of five times, the crown is perfect and can be permanently cemented at this visit. One out of 5 times, the crown does need to be sent back to the lab to stack more porcelain or alter color.

STEP 4

Cementation:
Your crown is permanently cemented.

STEP 5

Timeline:
The process typically takes three visits, each 3 weeks apart. For more information or to make an appointment, give us a call.

Recently had my first visit with Dr. Kim and it couldn't have gone any smoother. The office and patient room were spotless and looks to have the latest and greatest in medical equipment. She did a fantastic job on a full inspection and cleaning while explaining to me what exactly was going on with my teeth (which fortunately wasn't a lot, as she called me a boring patient 🤭). She even answered a few quick questions I had regarding my kid's teeth grinding. If you're looking for a new dentist, I would highly recommmend!!

I wish I could give more than 5 stars!! From beginning to end, this place is truly the best. I received THE MSOT thorough general exam. The staff is so professional, and nice. They called to confirm my appointment after booking online, I was greeted promptly, and seen 5 minute after my appointment time. Daisy and Dr. Liz were both awesome to work with! First time I'm excited to go back to the dentist.

FAQ

What is a porcelain crown?

Porcelain crowns are dental restorations made from a durable ceramic material that mimic the color and appearance of natural teeth. They are commonly used for aesthetic and functional purposes.

What is a cap crown?

A cap crown is another term for a dental crown. It covers the entire tooth to restore its appearance and protect it from further damage.

How long do crowns last?

Our goal is for the crowns you do with us to last a lifetime. Typically, crowns can last 10-15 years with proper care. Zirconia crowns and gold crowns, in particular, are durable and wear-resistant. If crowns are done on the front teeth, Dr. Kim may require you to wear a retainer or night guard at night to protect your investment.

Can crowns help with tooth pain?

Yes, crowns can alleviate tooth pain caused by decay by removing all the decay and restoring it back to health. Additionally, crowns can also support teeth that are cracked by providing a cover on all sides of the tooth and restoring the tooth’s function.

Are root canals necessary to get a crown?

A root canal is not a necessary precursor to receiving crown on a tooth. For example, worn down teeth or teeth with small fractures will benefit from a crown without root canal treatment. A root canal may be necessary when the cavity is so big that the bacteria has reached the nerve of the tooth. A root canal may also be necessary when a tooth has cracked in a certain direction into the nerve.

Can crowns be used on front teeth?

Yes, porcelain crowns are often used for front teeth because they provide a natural appearance and are strong enough to withstand regular chewing. When only one front tooth requires a crown, this is one of the most challenging cases in dentistry that requires excellent collaboration between our doctor & lab technician to match the shade perfectly. In this case, Dr. Kim may require the patient to go to the lab technician for a custom shade matching. Personally, Dr. Kim loves doing these challenging, ethically esthetic, fulfilling cases.
